Many homeowners would like to give their fireplaces a face lift. However, they are afraid that the cost would be tremendous. Hence, they keep putting it off. Well, the good news is, new fireplace designs doesn't have to cost a bomb. There are many different types of fireplaces around. Surely, there will be one or two that will fit within your budget.

Luxurious fireplace designs.

Luxurious fireplace designs usually cost more than other types of designs. If budget is not a concern, you may consider giving these designs a try. A luxurious design usually means that the design is rare or require a certain level of skill to create. Usually, they are custom made, and are therefore more costly. They are also made out of better materials such as marble or other costly stone. Such designs are mostly for those with exquisite personal tastes.

Mid range fireplace designs.

Mid range fireplace designs are perhaps the most popular. There is a balance between price and quality. They are cheaper compared to higher end designs because the designs are usually widely adopted, therefore bringing the cost down. You can easily browse a fireplace design catalog and choose from dozens of ready made designs. These designs are proven to be popular among many homeowners. They are usually made from widely available materials such as limestone or granite. The designs are not as complicated as other higher end designs, but you can expect the fireplace to be durable and last for many years.

Low budget fireplace designs.

If you have a budget constrain, your choices may be narrowed. This may be a good thing because it actually makes your decision making process easier. Low budget doesn't mean your new fireplace has to be of low quality. Modern technology has enabled many homeowners to replace older fireplaces with more energy efficient fireplaces.

These are usually self installed fireplaces. You can easily buy one from a local shopping mall. Modern fireplaces are powered by electricity instead of burning materials such as wood. Simply flick a switch, and you get to enjoy the heat. To complete the visual representation of a real fireplace, some electric fireplaces even come with fire simulations. A holographic fire image (not a real fire) can be displayed while the heat is on. Strictly speaking, it's probably not a real fireplace, but it works!

If a simulated fire doesn't work for you, and you still want a real fireplace even when you have a budget constrain, perhaps the best thing to do is to choose a design that is simple. A simple design is usually more classic. In other words, they never go out of style. Keep things simple, choose a basic fireplace design, and it may just be within your budget to get a new fireplace.
(Article Source: Ad-Matrix.net)

Fireplace Cleaning and Maintenance

People experience pleasure having their own fireplaces in their own homes. It is considered a central appliance in a room due to the warmth and comfort it provides. But to keep it working that way, people need to do a bit of effort to keep their fireplaces working well and they should also make sure to remember fireplace cleaning and maintenance tips.
The fireplace needs regular care and clean-up to ensure a secure and cost-effective fire. Creosote, a combustible tar-like matter that builds up in the chimney and flue, should be cleaned out by a professional to do away with at least one possible fire hazard. The fireplace and its accessories must be given routine cleaning all through the wood-burning season to eradicate a buildup of ashes, soot, and creosote tars.
To maintain the efficiency of fireplaces, cleaning and maintenance should be kept regular. During yearly inspections, the chimney should be examined for damage, buildup and proximity to combustibles. The place around the chimney and the fireplace must be kept tidy and free from debris. The flue should be checked for obstructions like birds'nests, and overhanging branches must also be cut. The fireplace, in general, must be cleaned when necessary. It must be inspected to make sure that there is sufficient protective linings and smoke ducts and that the chimney should be in good condition. The fireplace must likewise be kept clean so it would appear more pleasant to use and also to make it a better attribute for guests and visitors.
Some tips for fireplace cleaning and maintenance include the following:
1.To keep the brass shiny, a toothbrush and Worcestershire sauce should be used. The brass knobs and the door or metal parts around the fireplace can be cleaned by scrubbing since this would keep the area tidy and gleaming.
2.Doors should be open for venting. Avoid fire that burns longer than five hours.
3.To avoid hot embers from jumping onto the carpet, the screen should be kept close. Place a non-flammable rug directly on the fireplace. This is to avoid sparks from igniting the carpet or wooden floor.
4.Do not leave the fire unattended, especially when there are small children.
5.Use a chimney cap to avoid animal nesting, water damage or debris. This is also to avoid obstructing the chimney.
6.Clean out the firebox once a week. To help coals heat faster and to retain their heat longer, an inch of ash must be kept in the bottom to work as an insulator. Before the ash is taken out from the firebox, open the damper to avoid ashes spreading out. Do not use a vacuum cleaner in cleaning out the ash.
7.Use a brick cleaner when cleaning a brick fireplace. Use lemon oil every month or two to clean exterior slate hearths.
8.Clean gas logs once a month using a soft bristle brush. Avoid cleaning them right after a fire. periodically remove the excess ashes and unburned logs from the fire.
These are just some of the ways to ensure that the fireplace performs at its best. In addition, it's always an advantage to follow the fireplace cleaning and maintenance pointers religiously.

A winter wonderland — of safety

Household heating/cooking implements can cause havoc if misused
By Jim Walker

I know. You shelled out good money for that fresh-cut Christmas tree only a week ago, and you'll be darned if you're going to take it down before Jan. 2.

Understood. But remember to keep it watered and keep it far away from any sources of heat, and don't leave the house or go to bed with the tree lights on - same as before Christmas.

During the remaining holiday season, and for the rest of the winter, you must be extra vigilant about safety inside your home.

With everyone cozily tucked in, the windows sealed up to keep out the cold, and fireplaces and space heaters probably being employed to warm things up, there is increased danger from fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.

If you're burning seasonal candles there's even more possibility of something going wrong.

We'll offer some handy tips for winter safety from the Home Safety Council - but first, let's get a reinforcement from an expert. Los Angeles County Fire Captain Tom Robertson was kind enough to take a Christmas Eve interview by telephone from local Station 126. "Most of our fires over the holidays are from candles and from fireplaces burning too hot," he said. He went on to emphasize these and other safety issues.

Space heaters
"Be sure your space heater has a ‘UL Approved' stamp or sticker. That means the appliance has gone through a specific safety test and is approved," Robertson said. "And keep the heater away from the Christmas tree or any other combustibles."

He emphasized that the main hazard with space heaters is from Christmas trees. Even if they are kept in water, the trees are probably drying out by now and are ready to burn.

Candles
"Make sure your candles are out when you go to bed," Robertson said. "People light them for a party and, afterward, forget to put them out."

He added that candles should always be kept away from decorations, curtains and packages. The same, of course, goes for fireplaces and space heaters.

The Home Safety Council encourages families to enjoy holiday candles while always keeping fire safety in mind:

* Make sure an adult is in the room and paying attention whenever you light a candle. Blow out all candles before going to sleep or leaving the room.
* Do not permit children to keep or use candles or incense in their rooms. Candles should only be used when a sober adult is present and awake.
* Never use lighted candles on or near a Christmas tree or other evergreens.
* Keep candles at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including other decorations and wrapping paper.
* Always use stable, nonflammable candle holders with a hurricane glass to protect the open flame.
* Place candles where they will not be knocked down or blown over and out of reach of pets and young children.
* If you have children in your home, store candles, matches and lighters out of their sight and reach in a locked cabinet.
* To eliminate the risk of an open candle flame, use battery-powered candles whenever possible, especially when you combine candles with greenery or other decorations.
Source: www.homesafetycouncil.org

Fireplaces
Robertson said that people should be sure to keep their fireplace screens up and/or the glass doors closed. You never know when a spark may pop out of the fire.

Beyond that he noted that fireplaces installed in newer Southern California homes are not really designed to be sources of heat.

They're more for visual aesthetics and atmosphere. "Make sure your fireplace is designed for the amount of wood you put in there," he said. Those unfamiliar with our local fireplaces may stoke the fire up too hot, which can lead to the ducts getting too hot and starting fires in attics.

Smoke and CO detectors
Robertson said that having properly operating smoke detectors in your home is a must.

When it comes to carbon monoxide, he offered this advice. "If you are concerned with carbon monoxide, the easiest thing to do is crack a window." But he added that if having a carbon monoxide detector eases your concerns, by all means use one.

CO Poisoning
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a deadly gas that is difficult to detect because it is odorless and invisible. As a result, it is known as "the silent killer." According to the CDC, 450 people die and nearly 21,000 CO exposures occur each year.

CO is produced by fuel-burning appliances and equipment in our homes.

If you have heating, cooking or power equipment that uses fuels such as oil, natural gas, coal, wood, propane, gasoline, etc., then your home is at risk for potential CO poisoning. Homes with attached garages are also at risk, because vehicles left running in the garage can cause CO to seep into the home.

CO poisoning can be prevented by proper care and use of household equipment. CO alarms can provide early detection if CO leaks or accumulation occurs. Both are important for your safety.

If you suspect CO poisoning in your home, call the appropriate responding agency, usually your local fire department or 9-1-1. Keep all emergency response numbers posted by every telephone.

CO alarms are different from smoke alarms, and have different functions. CO alarms do not provide early warning of a fire.

Smoke alarms do not provide early warning of CO exposure. Your home needs CO and smoke alarm protection.

Symptoms of CO poisoning are similar to symptoms of the flu and can include headache, dizziness, nausea and shortness of breath.

To distinguish between symptoms of flu and CO poisoning - if you feel better after leaving home and then worse again when you return, it may be CO exposure causing the symptoms.

If your CO alarm sounds, check to see if it is plugged in properly, or if battery-powered, check the battery to be sure the device is operating. If you suspect that CO is leaking in your home, follow these steps:

Open windows and doors to ventilate the rooms, or in severe cases of CO exposure, evacuate the home.

Call to report that you suspect CO is accumulating. Usually the appropriate agency to call is the fire department or 9-1-1.

* Seek immediate medical treatment for anyone who has severe symptoms.

Follow the advice of the responding agency before re-entering your home, and quickly obtain repairs as needed.

Fireplaces, kitchen supplies and Indian food, oh my

This weekend I had the opportunity to sample three local/regional shopping destinations that were all new to me:

1)The Fireplace Shop at 1000 North F Street in Richmond is an amazing little brick complex that showcases all that can be done with wood and other heat sources. From traditional fireplaces to wood burning stoves to corn pellet stoves to crazy other conflagrant configurations, it was quite a wonderland of temperature control. With the added bits of atmosphere like lazy cats sprawled across warm surfaces, fireplace and chimney sweep nostalgia everywhere, and the hustle-bustle of workers in workshops catering to the demands of the cold season, it was a nice place just to be and observe. The store also adjoins a ceramic tile store (which sells the locally made Terra Green Ceramics line) and a brick/stone store, so you can knock out quite a bit of home improvement planning in one place. I can't imagine there's one of these in every community these days, and I'm certainly grateful to have one here.

2) Rohan India is a new-ish Indian Food restaurant in Oxford, Ohio that offers slightly faster access to this cuisine from Richmond than similar options in Dayton, Cincinnati or Indianapolis. The Chicken Shahi Korma with Mushrooms dish I had was probably the best Indiana dish I've had at any location in the region, and when I got a spice level of 6 (out of 10), they really came through with that. The proximity of this dining option may be just enough to balance out the problems with the atmosphere and service - several large screen televisions blaring music videos, sports games, etc. dominated the visual landscape, and we had to play the "forced eye contact and hand waving" game at times just to get a server to pay attention. But overall, it was a fine experience, and quickly becoming a destination for Richmondites - I've heard at least three other distinct mentions of it this weekend alone.

3) At Home Kitchen and Gourmet at 414 North 10th (in "The Loft" where Ghyslain is) is a new location brought to us by the folks at Warm Glow Candles. Right now the shop features a variety of kitchen and bath items with Warm Glow candles sprinkled amongst them. Many of the items seemed "pricey" for Richmond, but they were generally quite unique and beautiful, and compared to a Williams-Sonoma visit in Chicago, probably a good value. The clerk who checked us out indicated that the inventory was largely just overstock from the main Warm Glow store in Centerville, and that after the first of the year, they'd be reworking it to focus much more on being a comprehensive kitchen and bath supplier. Even though I'm not one to go shopping for such things regularly, it was just great to see a locally owned place like this pop up here.

On top of that, I got to attend the Alternative Holiday Bazaar at the Clear Creek Food Cooperative, which showcased locally-made crafts and gifts on Saturday against the backdrop of live music and smiling faces - the items will be on sale all this week too.

Seeing these places, these events, these people reminds me that there are people investing anew in this community and in the surrounding ones, people making a living here and doing it in such fun and interesting ways - I'm thankful for that.

source article: http://www.chrishardie.com/blog/2008/12/fireplaces-kitchen-supplies-and-indian-food-oh-my.html

8 Reasons To Build Your Fireplace With Manufactured Stone by Jerry Lebiedzinski

Ontario, Canada (MMD Newswire) November 18, 2008 -- A fireplace is often the centerpiece of a home, where friends and family gather to relax and converse. It seems to epitomize comfort and luxury, warmth and charm. Yet, for many homes a natural stone fireplace is not a practical option. Besides the high cost of the stone itself, the weight of the mantel-piece, the surround, and the hearth usually means building the firebox and chimney in an outside wall above a solid foundation, or -- for an interior design -- seriously reinforcing the floor.

Fortunately, there is another option. Manufactured stone from a quality supplier provides many of the advantages of natural stone without any of the drawbacks.

Manufactured stone perfectly matches the appearance of natural stone.

Whether it's the rough-hewn look of fieldstone or the gentle contours of streamstone, quality manufactured stone, often referred to as artificial stone or cultured stone, so perfectly emulates the look and feel of natural stone it can fool even experienced masons.

This remarkable achievement comes from using a formulation of Portland cement, natural aggregates, and carefully selected pigments in meticulously detailed molds modeled after natural stone. The result is a finished product virtually indistinguishable from the original.

Manufactured stone is light weight.

Manufactured stone typically weighs much less than natural stone, about two-thirds the weight of natural stone veneer and less than a quarter the weight of full-block natural stone. This provides significant savings in shipping and labor costs, as well as reducing the need for costly structural reinforcing.

Manufactured stone is easy to install.

Thanks to its light weight and convenient sizes and shapes, with a little planning and attention to detail even weekend handymen can successfully install artificial stone veneer. All that's required is following the vendor's simple instructions and observing basic precautions.

Other than perhaps a circular saw with a masonry blade for cutting stones to size, there's no need for many of the heavy-duty power tools often required when working with natural stone. Standard hand masonry tools will do.

Manufactured stone can be installed on virtually any wall.

Since its light weight eliminates the need for special footings and foundations, and since it can be applied to any structurally sound wall surface, artificial stone veneer is a perfect building material for fireplaces. It simplifies construction of new fireplaces and remodeling of older, plain brick units.

Manufactured stone is durable and maintenance-free.

Reputable manufacturers of artificial stone provide a 50 year warranty on their product, but that's not the limit of the stone's life-expectancy.

Properly applied, quality manufactured stone can be expected to last much longer, even on external walls subject to the elements. Inside a home, on a fireplace for example, manufactured stone veneer should provide service for many generations.

Manufactured Stone is safe for fireplaces.

Obviously, when constructing a wood or gas-burning fireplace, flammability of the building materials is a concern. By its very nature, manufactured stone is non-combustible. It contributes zero fuel and produces no smoke.

Manufactured stone offers wide variety.

Available in dozens of different styles, textures, and colors, artificial stone veneer can emulate any natural stone. This gives you broad flexibility in designing a fireplace that perfectly complements your home and lifestyle, whether traditional or contemporary.

Manufactured Stone is less expensive than natural stone.

Using manufactured stone veneer saves you money in three ways. First, the product itself costs less than natural stone.

Second, because artificial stone veneer weighs so much less than natural stone, the cost to ship the stone to your job site -- which can be prohibitive for natural stone -- is much less.

Third, labor costs are usually lower, since manufactured stone is lighter and easier to work with. Masons can install the product faster, saving both time and money.

Make the right choice.

Once you've decided on artificial stone veneer for your fireplace, the next question is where to obtain it. Choose a vendor that offers a sound warranty, a wide selection of stone, and that has a reputation for quality as solid as the stone itself.

For Canadian builders, Stone Selex satisfies all of these criteria. Stone Selex is the authorized Canadian distributor of Artistic Stone and Canyon Stone. They offer a 50-year warranty on dozens of varieties of artificial stone suitable for both interior and exterior projects including stone walls and fences, chimneys, pillars, and of course fireplaces.

Based in the greater Toronto area, Stone Selex supplies manufactured stone veneer to wholesalers, construction companies, and individual buyers across Ontario, from Windsor to Ottawa, from Niagara to Thunder Bay and beyond.

AUTHOR BIO

Jerry Lebiedzinski is the President of Stone Selex, a premier supplier of artificial stone wall and manufactured stone in Canada. I am sure they would like some direction or advice."

Duffield said he and his wife live in a condominium complex with similar-sized units all built at the same time.

"It is easy to compare properties using the website at www.mpac.ca. MPAC stresses you can compare similar properties to determine the accuracy of your assessment. I compared five similar units in our complex and discovered that our unit was assessed at $10,000 more than the others ... $212,000 verses $202,000. The MPAC attributed the difference to us having a gas fireplace and an end unit. But all the units I used for comparison also had fireplaces and were end units."

What was going on, Duffield wondered?

"An employee of the corporation agreed there had been a mistake in the assessment and I could rest assured that next year my neighbours' assessment would be raised to the level of mine.

"I told him it wasn't my intention to have my neighbours' taxes increased but to have mine equitable to similar properties. I voiced my concern that if they found out that I was the source of their tax increase I am sure I would not be well liked."

Well, it's not Duffield's fault, but it's always a tricky situation when one starts to compare assessments because you're certain to find discrepancies.

MPAC has just mailed 4.7 million reassessment notices to Ontario homeowners. Hamilton homes are said to be worth on average 22.5 per cent more than in 2005. That means the average assessment will increase 5.6 per cent each year from 2009 through to 2012.

"Mistakes get made, but they are a relatively small number overall," says David Baulcomb of MPAC's Hamilton office.

"After he (Duffield) contacted our office, we reviewed the building plans for the development and confirmed what he was saying.

"For some reason, our assessments did not show that the other properties had fireplaces and were end units. They are now coded properly and their assessments will be the same as his in the future."

After all, that's the basic philosophy behind assessments. We're supposed to be trying to maintain equity.

MPAC relies on 'whistleblowers' and regular inspections in order to meet that goal.

"We invite people to call us," Baulcomb says. "But we also inspect properties after they have been sold and keep track of building permits."

Of course, homeowners don't always bother to obtain building permits.

And sometimes they don't even realize renovations may lead to higher assessments and increased taxes.

But it's likely that most of them do.

If you have a consumer problem, call 905-526-4665 or e-mail amacrury@thespec.com. Shopping for clothes was an eye opening experience. Just like everything else, back to school prices are sky high.

I found a few sales and saved myself some money. But, I couldn’t get away with everything. Some shoes, supplies and clothes just couldn’t be bought on sale.

Reaching deep into my pockets, I found a way to stretch every dime and still keep on top of my other expenses. It seems like everything is just shooting through the roof. I’m wondering what the heating costs are going to be like this year.

Everyone should be worried about heating costs. Gas prices were ridiculously high this summer and even though they seem to be coming down, or the media is trying to make us think so, I just see them on a steady hold in the very high range. I don’t know how anyone else feels, but if you feel like me you feel the crunch.

Ventless Gel Fireplaces are the alternative to look toward this year when you are trying to heat your home. Fuel prices will affect the cost of gas heating and everything affected by fuel prices will inherently increase. Electric companies will have to raise their prices to accommodate their own expenses and that will affect your electric heating as well.

But, Sunjel gel fuel used in Ventless Gel Fireplaces is an alcohol based gel that evaporates into a water vapor. That makes it environmentally safe as well as economically sound. A can of Sunjel burns for about three hours and throws heat through the room even though, technically, Ventless Gel Fireplaces aren’t categorized as a heating source.

That’s the irony. I purchased one for my parents and I set it up for them. It came with a case of Sunjel and in no time at all, we had a fire going in their living room.

I had purchased the unit in August a few years ago because I wanted my parents to have it for the winter months. So, it was toward the end of August when it arrived and I put it together. So to show them how it works, I lit a can and we enjoyed the burning fire while I explained things.

My mother walked out to the kitchen and just lingered out there while I talked about all the fireplace’s features. It’s portable. It can easily go in any room. It’s safe. The fire goes out easily and if you fall asleep, it doesn’t throw sparks. So, you can rest easy.

It was about that time that I noticed my mother lingering in the kitchen and my father finally blurted out, "Ok, you can shut it off now. It’s getting hot in here and I’ve got the central air running."

That’s when I noticed the heat myself. Taking the chill off of the cold winter months is all it’s going to take to keep your heating costs from running sky high this year. Having a little fire is far better than walking around the house bundled up in a blanket while watching your breath turn to ice.

About the Author

Online business entrepreneur, Theresa Mahers taps into unique niche markets she loves passionately. Of course, the benefits of owning a fireplace that is electric as opposed to a traditional wood burning fireplace are many. Besides the obvious safety benefits and convenience of lighting...electric fireplaces do not contribute to global warming in the way that the traditional wood burning ones do. You will also save money on firewood and any other costs such as chimney maintenance. They also produce just as much heat as a regular wood burning fireplace, which you may or may not have known.

Electric fireplaces are also much more realistically installed in places such as apartments, offices, small (or big) homes, townhouses, etc. No need to carve out and add on a chimney! They are also portable so you will have no problem changing your room around and trying different things. You can not do that with a wood fireplace. They look elegant and are a beautiful, cozy addition to any home.

With global warming becoming an increasingly larger concern, and the fact that carbon emission of any kind are harmful to the atmosphere, you can easily see how you can do your part to help protect our resources. Carbon monoxide caused by smoke damages our Earth's atmosphere. Why should we do that? Just for our own selfish reasons? We can enjoy the same comfort, the same beautiful look and have the same effect as a fire burning one -- only with much more convenience, no flames or sparks, no maintenance, no need for ventilation, portability and without polluting our environment.

It is clear that the benefits of owning an electric fireplace exceed those of a wood burning one by ten fold. The question is, are you willing to go for it, just because it's so much better?

About the Author

You can find out more about an Electric Fireplace as well as much more information on everything to do with fireplaces and fireplace accessories at http://www.FireplacesA-Z.com

ImportAdvantage(R) Introduces TV Lift Furniture with Flair and Fire

BOCA RATON, Fla., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- ImportAdvantage
(http://www.importadvantage.com), a leading designer and manufacturer of TV
lift furniture, today unveiled the industry's first and only TV lift
cabinet with a built-in electric fireplace.

"Our customers are looking for a unique combination of innovation and
sophistication," said Rob Buehl, president of ImportAdvantage. Not only it would save lots of money, it would be beneficial towards the health of you and your family as it could keep the quality of air inside your home much cleaner. Most homes are not provided with the kind of ventilation required for running a regular wood burning fireplace. The gases produced by burning of wood do not get exhausted properly as the houses are built very tightly. If you use an electric fireplace, there is no such problem. A few tips could be given to enable you to select a proper electric fireplace for your home: 1. Electric fireplaces are available many different styles. Electric fireplaces could be full size one complete with real wood mantles. These also could be classic full standing stoves. Therefore, your choice will depend on what kind of look you want to give to your room. 2. Next important point to decide is the location where you want to place the fireplace inside the room. You would like to place it at the focal point of the room where everybody would be looking at. Even if it is a corner of a room, it does not matter. There are electric fireplaces which could be placed at the corner of a room. 3. Before you start your search for a suitable electric fireplace, you have to ensure that the room has a proper electric connection which could handle the extra load. A 1350 Watt/ 4600 BTU unit would draw about 8 Amps of current. Ideally, the room should have a completely separate electric line to cater for this demand of an electric fireplace. 4. In order to install such electric fireplace, you might have to take proper approval for drawing this higher current. 5. After you have taken proper action against all the above points, it is now time for you to go ahead with buying an electric fireplace to your choice. You will find a number of models of such electric fireplaces available at hardware super stores in your neighborhood. 6. To enjoy the warmth of this fireplace, you would only have to assemble it and plug it on. A few more tips and warnings are being added here which may be kept in mind in the operation of electric fireplace: 1 If your home already has a fireplace, you may buy just the electric logs to be placed in it rather buying the complete unit. 2 If you do not require heat but would like to enjoy looking at the flames, the heater could be turned off. Still you would have the feel of a fireplace. 3 One advantage is that you could place the fireplace at a different location, if you do not like the present position of the fireplace. 4 But, you must be prepared for increased electric bill.

About the Author

For more insights and further information about Fire Surroundvisit our site http://fireplacemegastore.co.uk/

Electric Fireplaces

By Kent Pinkerton

Electric Fireplaces are one of the latest products in the hearth industry. These are electric devices that are becoming hot favorites in many homes. Electric Fireplaces include a built-in heater regulated by a switch and a space for open fire.

Electric fireplaces are considered zero clearance units, as the devices can be installed wherever there is electrical power. An existing fireplace opening can accommodate an electric fireplace; it can also be built into the mantel. These devices can be placed in places where wood burning stoves and traditional fireplaces cannot be installed. An electric fireplace kit, a clean lint-free rag, a glass cleaner, and a drill are the required items for installation. Electric fireplaces can be installed in fewer steps than wood burning stoves and gas fireplaces.

The electric fireplaces available today have air filtration systems, built-in fans, and heatless settings enclosed in cases. Remote controlled devices are also available. Some latest models are even provided with built-in thermostats in order to flip off the heater automatically when the desired temperature is reached.

Electric fireplaces have many advantages. There is no need to build a permanent unit such as chimney or venting system outside, as the permanent units consume labor as well as installation charge while building. These devices simulate flames without burning anything. Hence, there will not be any discharge of toxic fumes. Also, the combustible materials (such as wood) nearby will not be affected.

Electric fireplaces have gained much popularity among homeowners, as the devices are simple and easy to handle. They require only a standard 120-volt outlet for functioning. Electric fireplaces are usually smaller in size, lightweight, and are portable. Also, they are cheaper compared to gas fireplaces. Hence, these devices find wide usage in apartments, high-rise buildings, offices, town homes, condominiums, and cottages.

Fireplaces provides detailed information on Fireplaces, Outdoor Fireplaces, Fireplace Chimneys, Gas Fireplaces and more. Fireplaces is affiliated with Wood Fireplace Mantels.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Kent_Pinkerton

Tips to find perfect Electric Fireplace for your home by Jessica Thomson

When you are thinking of providing a fireplace in your home, you could go for an electric fireplace. Limestone fireplaces are also a great addition to new houses and are available in a variety of styles, colours and sizes to suit your home.

The History of Limestone

Each piece of natural limestone is unique and unlike any other piece due to the way it is formed. A sedimentary rock made of calcium carbonate CaCO3 limestone originates on the floor bed of tropical seas and turns into stone by the accumulation of the constituent grains of calcite. Calcium and bicarbonate ions in the water combine to form calcium carbonate as the water is warmed by the sun and carbon dioxide is given off to form limestone. The appearance and quality of the limestone is influenced by factors such as the quantity of calcium carbonate in the limestone and the amount of fossil contained in the limestone.

The colour of the limestone is also decided at an early stage in its formation, as different amounts of iron oxide dissolving produces cream, orange, brown and red shades whilst grey and black shades are produced by organic matter and iron sulphide.

Experts can effectively read the history of a piece of limestone and decipher when and where it was formed.

The Design of your Limestone Fireplace

As a versatile stone, limestone can either be carved or left untreated for a more contemporary looking fireplace. Due to the uniqueness of the stone, few limestone fireplaces are the same and most have different dimensions and styles, so you can be confident in the knowledge that your fireplace is a 'one off'.

The dimensions of the fireplace can be tailored to meet your requirements and made to compliment your interior design scheme. Fireplaces from reputable companies are usually individually made and signed off by a master mason, an expert in stone. The beauty of the limestone fireplace is that these days it is at home under any chimney with or without a hearth or mantel and is functional for any type of wood burning, solid fuel, electric, gas or enclosed stove fire.

One of the advantages of a limestone fireplace is that they never go out of style. You may choose to go for a more contemporary simple design, alternatively you may consider an elaborate design. Stone and art have worked alongside each other for years and fireplace consultants are starting to use stone in new and creative ways. If you are looking for a jaw dropping focal point for your room you will appreciate the fine detailing that can be achieved in a limestone fireplace design.

The Cost of your Limestone Fireplace

The price of limestone fireplaces is very much dependent on the quality, style and finish you choose. As fireplaces can be tailored to your requirements, most fireplace consultants will provide you with an idea of the cost based on your specifications. A limestone fireplace may be a little more expensive but is definitely worth the investment for your home.

About the Author

To view a range of limestone fireplaces visit registered installers of fireplaces MK Fireplaces at http://www.mkfireplaces.co.uk. (PRWEB) July 11, 2008 -- As the days stretch into the long, light, hazy days of summer, thoughts turn to vacations. This year, with the escalating costs of gas and a weak dollar "homecations" are becoming popular. Vacationing at home can be a great incentive to update and upgrade your surroundings. Decorating does not have to involve a lot of time or expense when you follow these inventive tips from Sally Morse, Director of Creative Services for Hunter Douglas, North America's largest and most successful manufacturer of custom window fashions, to give an instant uplift to every room in your house:

* Living Rooms

Refresh your living room for summer with slipcovers in light, washable fabrics. Morse suggests bringing standard slipcovers to a monogram shop where you can add your initials, a family crest or motto to give them a custom look. Lighten up that dark fireplace with the addition of some pale wood strung with lights and replace pictures with groupings of mirrors to add reflected light to a room.

Take down heavy draperies and bring the outdoors in with Hunter Douglas Silhouette® window shadings. Featuring soft fabric vanes suspended between two sheer facings, this window fashion allows you to have your view and even with the vanes open, filter out up to 88 percent of harmful UV rays. A new Bouclé fabric for this product features an organic-inspired, natural look in the three-inch and a four-inch vane size that is ideal for a lighter look for summer.

* Bedrooms

To refresh your bedroom for a "homecation" Morse suggests new bedding to make the room seem like it belongs in a luxurious boutique hotel. Add some pillows in a variety of sizes anchored by a bolster. Top the bed with a lightweight blanket or pretty sheet and roll a comforter at the foot to have on hand for chilly evenings. Morse also recommends adding some "green" to your rooms with new bamboo fabrics that offer great softness and moisture absorption, making them an especially good choice for summer.

According to Morse, a new coat of paint is one of the quickest and most dramatic decorating uplifts. Bring home those tranquil colors from a seaside vacation, especially the soft blue / greens at the point where the sky meets the sea.

As psychologists advise that we sleep better in a dark room, add some room-darkening window treatments. New Pirouette® window shadings are available in two opacities -- semi-opaque and room-darkening -- in a delightful array of textured fabrics and colors. This innovative window fashion resembles a hobbled Roman shade, but features soft horizontal fabric vanes attached to a sheer backing that open into soft contoured folds for an enhanced view and slide into a flattened position for excellent light blockage -- and a good night's sleep, especially in the room-darkening option.

* Bathrooms

Morse suggests turning your master bath into a spa with the addition of piles of white towels, scented candles and a fresh coat of paint. And don't forget the "fifth" wall...if you choose white for the walls try painting the ceiling sky blue. To have privacy plus a real sky view in your bath select a window fashion with a Top-Down / Bottom-Up design option such as Duette® Architella™ honeycomb shades. This product features a patented honeycomb-within-a-honeycomb construction for more air pockets than traditional honeycomb shades. It dramatically increases insulating R-values (resistance to heat flow) in colder months and offers impressive Solar Heat Gain Coefficients (SHGC) ratings to cut cooling costs in warmer months.

* Kitchens

Don't be afraid of adding color to your kitchen, Morse advises. She reports that the recent addition of a black glass backsplash to her counters sets off other colors and adds space by creating an optical illusion of infinity. Something as simple as changing your kitchen towels can add color and "spice" to a kitchen. At the windows, consider the addition of Heritance® hardwood shutters. These custom-crafted shutters add architectural interest to a room, are easy to maintain and are now available in more colors than ever.

* Dining Rooms

To dress up your dining room, get your silver, mercury glass and china out from the cupboard and put it on display. Add an area rug and change the shades on lamps and ceiling fixtures. Sheer shades will create a soft translucent light. Put all lighting on dimmers so that you can be the movie director of your meals! For summer don't forget natural light. Now is a good time to send heavy draperies to the dry cleaner or replace them all together with a more versatile window fashion like Silhouette window shadings, or Luminette® Privacy Sheers, a product similar to Silhouette shadings but on the vertical.

* Media Rooms

These are now perhaps the most popular new room in the house. To make yours seem like a movie theater, take some tips from Morse and add movie posters (available on the Internet) and a popcorn machine.

Be sure to have opaque window coverings. A good choice is newly updated Somner® Custom Vertical Blinds, the most complete collection of vinyl and fabric styles on the market with the rich look of hardwood offered as well. Motorization and specialty track systems make it possible to operate these blinds with a touch of a button for show time.

Another excellence choice is Vignette® Modern Roman Shades, a dramatically improved innovation on the traditional Roman shade available in everything from seersucker to satin weaves, with PowerRise® with Platinum™ Technology for remote control operation at the touch of a button. Duette Architella honeycomb shades in an opaque fabric with PowerRise with Platinum Technology are another option. Both of these products also offer high sound absorption ratings.

* Children's Rooms

Follow Morse's tips for children's rooms to better organize the space, eliminate clutter and provide the kids with a room they'll want to spend time in. For an inexpensive headboard that also has shelf space, Morse suggests painting a ladder in bright colors. And brighten up standard white or wood-tone storage units with brightly colored paint or fun decals. Decorate the walls to reflect your child's special interests -- hang a tutu on the wall for a budding ballerina and for your little league star create a window valance with a bat. Make curtains from blue denim and add giant red pockets where your little leaguer can stash his treasure instead of heaping them on the floor! For privacy and soft, diffused light control at the window, use the Playful Possibilities™ collection from Nantucket window shadings, a casual, limited product offering for the budget-minded consumer that allows you to mix and match fabrics and hardware in colors like Spinnaker Blue, Yellow Canopy, Limeade and Cotton Candy. A glue gun can transform an inexpensive lamp into something personal and pretty with the addition of bright buttons.

To address the hazards to young children that can be posed by window covering cords, Hunter Douglas has pioneered safety at the window with the LiteRise® Touch System for cordless operation as well single-cord lift systems, break-away tassels and cord stops, cord tensioners, wand/cord controls and other safety options.

* Home office

Today as many people are work at home some or all of the time, chances are you need a home office but frequently that space has to serve more than one purpose. Morse advises adding a sleep sofa so your office can also serve as a guest room. Here again she suggests using paint to personalize standard storage units Add family photos and a comfortable chair to make your home office seem more residential and less commercial. That way work won't seem so tough.

With these tips, your home will have an instant uplift for the summer and beyond.

Hunter Douglas Inc. is a national sponsor of Habitat for Humanity, covering windows in every Habitat home built in the U.S. and Canada. If you are looking to add beauty to your home, without the use of heavy types of stones and materials, natural stone is a wonderful choice. This particular type of rock is also referred to as "thinstone". This is a type of veneer that is cut to ensure quality, yet is extremely lightweight. Many fireplaces have been created using this particular type of material. This is mainly due to the fact that the stone is highly versatile when it comes to color and texture and that it can hold up to a large amount of various conditions as it is so durable. Here, you will be introduced to this building material, as well as some advantages and disadvantages associated with using it.

Advantages of Natural Stone

Many advantages have been associated with stone that is natural. One of the first advantages is that is it suitable to any budget. Being that it is cut relatively thin, this makes an affordable choice for those that have a specific budget outlined for their home improvement and home repair endeavors. The next advantage is that it is lightweight, so it is quite easy to install the pieces with little to no effort. As mentioned previously, there are many different colors and textures available when it comes to selecting thinstone for the home. This product gives the overall appearance of real stone, yet the flexibility of manufactured stone. This is why many homeowners elect to use this for their home improvement projects.

Disadvantages of Natural Stone

When researching any type of building material for the home, it is always a good idea to ensure that you not only research the advantages of using the product, but the disadvantages as well. There are a few points that may be identified as a disadvantage to using natural stone in and around the home. These are as follows:
1. This is a natural manufactured stone. Many individuals prefer to stay away from stone types that are created. If you are looking for a product that is created from rocks obtained naturally, this may not be an ideal choice for you.
2. There is a possibility that the product may experience chipping and scratching. While this is basically a disadvantage, there is a positive side. If chipping or scratching occurs, the stone is created in such a manner that the under surface is the same as the outer surface. This means that it will blend in appropriately.
3. Individuals who use this type of stone may feel that it is not as durable as stones obtained naturally. However, it does have a high tolerance for extreme conditions.

Where to Find Other Natural Stone Fireplace Ideas

If you want to find more natural stone fireplace ideas, there are many different places where you can do so. The internet is loaded with unique designs and ideas for the home. Furthermore, home improvement stores such as Lowe's and Home Depot often carry a large assortment of books on the subject. Their popularity has grown in recent years due to a number of significant changes in the way fireplaces can be installed. Traditionally hole in the wall fireplaces required a hearth to be mounted on the floor in front of the fireplace even thought it was possible to install the fireplace up in the wall. However today, selected designs have been officially test and approved to be installed without the need for a hearth. Hole in the wall fires usually come in just two main types; gas fire insert units and self contained units. There are hole in the wall fires available for both Class 1 (typically brick built chimneys found in houses build before 1970), Class 2 (flue box/chamber connected to a 5" internal diameter pipe or flexible flue liner) and Precast flue systems. In most cases hole in the wall fires are designed for the use of gas as the fuel source. For those who do not have a chimney there are a number of wall fires available with a Power Flue or Balanced Flue option.

When choosing your hole in the wall fire it is worth considering the heat output you require. If you are using your fire as a secondary heat source alongside central heating, most fires on the market should be able to meet your requirements. However if you require your fire to be the main source of heating in your room then it is worth shopping around for the right one.

Wall fires or hole in the wall fires are particularly ideal if space is at a premium or if you do not want a traditional surround hearth. Most hole in the wall fires are positioned 3-5 feet of the floor on the wall and so they are able to free up valuable floor space. Many hole in the wall fires feature modern design and styling. They can fit well into both modern and traditional homes making a dramatic statement and adding a contemporary feel to any room. They are a real stylish alternative to any contemporary setting. Described as 'a truly modern centerpiece for contemporary living' the hole in the wall fire brings an added sophistication to the cosy living room fire and offers a great alternative.

Prices and designs can differ enormously. There are many fires, fuel types and finishes to choose from. Materials for hole in the wall fires include granite, marble, corian, metal and stone with brushed or polished steel amongst the popular finishes. Hole in the wall fireplaces also come in a range of materials in all shapes and sizes and many fireplace consultants will provide you with the option of a made to measure fireplace.

Whilst many hole in the wall fires do not require a hearth, it is still best to seek the expert opinion and advice of a fireplace consultant or corgi engineer prior to purchase.

About the Author

For more information on hole in the wall fires please visit MK Fireplaces at http://www.mkfireplaces.co.uk. For those who have just moved into a new home or apartment with a gas fireplace or one who may be searching for a new log for their gas fireplace, the following will present some steps to follow when purchasing logs for a fireplace of this type. The first step is to figure out the size of log your gas fireplace takes. Certain fireplaces will take certain sized logs and it is important that you know the exact size to purchase. You can check with the fireplace manual if you have that handy or look at the log which is already in place within the fireplace. In addition, taking down the style and product number of your gas fireplace will help to lead you in the right direction. You may then contact the manufacturer of the fireplace to figure out what type of gas log you need to obtain.

Gas logs also come in different varieties. Therefore, the next step to take on the way to purchasing the perfect type of gas fireplace logs is to determine which type of gas log you want to buy. The best way to help you decide this factor is to read various reviews on gas log types for fireplaces and see which ones consumers are using most often. You may then narrow down the options by selecting the gas logs that you think will best suit your own gas fireplace at home.

The next thing you need to do before starting the shopping trip is to figure out how much you want to spend on a log of this type. Gas logs are also available in a number of different price ranges. Some individuals will be able to spend large amounts of money on fireplace logs whereas others will have to remain within a set budget so that they do not break the bank. When shopping around for various gas logs for the fireplace, determine what price ranges are available for the specific types of logs that you hope to purchase. This way you won't get to the fireplace log store and then later realize that you don't have enough money to make your desired purchase.

The last step is heading out to buy your fireplace logs. When considering where to buy these logs, you have a few different options. You can purchase gas burning logs at home improvement stores, fireplace stores or through vendors which sell this type of item online. You can locate them either in front of the fireplace or in the entranceway of your room. If placed in front of the fire they will blow the air through that particular room. If you place them in a doorway, they will blow the heat to other areas of the home; this way is more effective at heating your home. The cost of fireplace blowers can range from seventy-five to a few hundred dollars depending on the exact size, make and model of the unit you decide to purchase. Usually, the more you spend, the more efficient the blower. Many people love having a fireplace in their home, it can be relaxing and romantic as well. If you need to or want to spread the warmth of the fire around then you should look into purchasing one of these devices.

If you can keep the air warm during the winter months with your fireplace, then you could reduce your heating costs. Fireplace blowers are a great idea for this to happen. They do not have any effect on the actual combustion of the fire itself. It is not difficult to install one of these devices. You do need to have a power source nearby though to avoid having a cord trailing across your floor.

Fireplace blowers are available from a number of locations. Specialty stores that focus on fireplaces and accessories carry them, as do some of the big box home centers as well. By doing a search on your favorite search engine, you should be able to come up with a large number of websites that sell these products. If purchasing them online, keep in mind that you will likely pay for shipping and handling as well. These devices work well in a room that is rather large because they distribute the heat quite effectively around the room. If you have a small room then a blower may not be a wise investment unless you plan to place it in a doorway to distribute the heat to another room.

Most homeowners use their fireplace as a secondary source of heat. Very few homes use them as their central heating source. Regardless of the reasons for using one, getting the heat dispersed relatively evenly is quite difficult. The use of fireplace blowers helps alleviate this standard problem. In fact, around twenty-seven million homes in the United States have a fireplace of some kind. Some of the companies that are making these products are Pancake, Drolet, ProCom and JUCA.

There are two common styles of fireplaces are metal units or the factory manufactured style along with the masonry type that is built right on site. Both styles can make use of fireplace blowers. Determine the size of the blower that you will require for your home. If you have a large room that needs the full effect of the heat then you will need a larger style unit. If you have a small room, obviously a smaller blower is more appropriate.

About the Author

We provide information on all things related to fireplaces such as a fireplace heat exchanger, ventless fireplaces and fireplace blowers along with many other items concerning your fireplace. This may seem unbelievable but it is possible to do and anyone is able to do it. There is no need to call a handyman, no need to hire a remodeling crew, and no need to beg your crafty and mechanically inclined neighbor to help you. Compared to other fireplace options, such as gas logs, gas inserts, pellet stoves, or traditional wood-burning fireplaces, purchasing and installing an electric fireplace really is a piece of cake. The first step is obviously purchasing the electric fireplace. This is a step that you cannot bypass. Most of the time you need to really look and determine the exact look or style of the fireplace that you want. Just remember that electric fireplaces aren't purchased because they are efficient ways to heat a home--in truth they are somewhat glorified space heaters and are not an alternative heating option. They consume a goodly amount of power, but if you turn down your central heating and stay in the room where you'll be using the fireplace, you can find them enough to keep your area cozy. Because electric fireplaces aren't really alternative heat sources, you will mostly be choosing yours based on style and getting the look you want. You should however, look for the most energy efficient models you can find to reduce the energy costs.

To install the actual electric fireplace all you generally need to do is decide upon a location that is close to a power outlet. This is essential so that you can plug it up and ensure that you are not having to use an extension cord to reach the plug. This may mean you need to change your intended location to a place that is closer to the power plug. If you are looking to put an electric fireplace in a location that does not have a plug, you could always have a plug installed in the location that you want.

I recommend putting your fireplaces somewhere the plug and cord will be hidden. Most models come with mantels or surrounds that make the fireplaces look real, but it's quite the giveaway if there's a power cord snaking out from behind your fireplace and running across the room.

Once you have selected the location you want the electric fireplace installed in you need to determine how exactly the unit mounts to the wall. Many just use screws or hooks to hang from the wall which will need some preparation work in order to ensure that the installation goes smoothly. Some units are entirely freestanding, so you don't even need a tool to "install" them. Generally, once you have the unit attached to the wall the only part of installation that is left is simply plugging the unit in. This is overall such a simple process that anyone is capable of installing a great new electric fireplace in only a few minutes time and enjoying the warmth and ambiance of the flames.

Overall, an electric fireplace is a great way to add a nice cozy touch to your home for a low price and with little labor required. Home improvement just got easier and this is the easiest it can possibly get.

TC Thorn writes for a popular home improvement blog and has written several articles on electric fireplaces. Do you need extra heat for a particular room? Are you going to be using it indoors or outdoors? You answers to these questions will play a major role in determining the best fireplace for your particular situation. Sears Electric Fireplaces are not suitable for outdoor use. They are more suitable for indoor use since they use electricity and need to be plugged into an electric outlet.

Value

Are you flipping a house or hoping to increase the overall value of your home? If so, you should definitely avoid buying a Sears Electric Fireplace. These fireplaces are not permanent fixtures. They will not increase the value of your home what so ever. Most of the time they are there to do their job and not look pretty.

Type of Home

The type of home you currently live in will effect your decision as well. Sears Electric Fireplaces can be used in any type of home but they are more suitable for apartments and condominiums. This is true because they can easily be moved from room to room. They can easily be taken with you if you ever decide to move. Most people consider apartments and condominiums to be their temporary residence which means they'll eventually be moving. Other fireplaces would most likely be left behind.

Operation Costs

Sears Electric Fireplaces tend to be less expensive than most other types of fireplaces. However, they require a lot of electricity. The results of using a Sears Electric Fireplace will show up noticeably on your electric bill. So over time you may end up saving money by buying other types of fireplaces unless you don't use them very often.

Why Sears?

Sears is one of the most popular electric fireplace retailers. Of course, they sell other products as well. The brands they care are top of the line. They usually offer a long term warranty with every appliance purchased. Sears Electric Fireplaces are very reliable.

Looking for Sears Electric Fireplaces Then visit our website!
 Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Frank_Fenway
